OSHA Hazardous Material Regulations

Safety is critical when dealing with dangerous chemicals. To help promote workplace safety, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulates chemical safety rules. Failing to follow these regulations increases the risk of exposing your employees to harmful chemicals and can lead to fines. Read more about properly handling hazardous chemicals and how Axiom’s safety products exceed industry standards.

Important Chemical Safety Rules

Employers that have hazardous chemicals in their workplaces are required to have a hazard communication program. OSHA recommends these six steps when implementing an effective communication program:

Create Roles

Becoming familiar with OSHA regulations is an important first step in making your workplace compliant. Assigning a responsible employee to coordinate communication and address all of the necessary components helps organize a program.

Create a Hazard Communication Program

Preparing a written plan helps ensure that your business is compliant and that all factors are considered. A written program requires employers to maintain a list of hazardous chemicals on a worksite and use identifiers.

Proper Labeling

Chemical manufacturers provide labels on shipped containers that lists the following information:

  • Product identifier
  • Signal word
  • Pictograms
  • Hazard statements
  • Precautionary statements
  • Name, address, and phone number

The employer is required to make sure that containers are labeled correctly in the workplace. You may use the same label from the supplier, but they all must include the identifier and general information regarding the chemicals’ hazardous properties.

Safety Data Sheet (SDS)

SDSs are the primary source of detailed information on a particular hazardous chemical. Employers are required to maintain copies of SDSs and must request one if not provided by the supplier. All SDSs must be readily accessible in work areas, and supervisors should print copies if the supplier only offers electronic versions.

Employee Training

Train employees on the hazardous chemicals in their work area before working and when you introduce new hazards. Employees need to be made aware of the protective measures available during training sessions and who they should contact if an accident occurs.

Evaluate Frequently

Review your hazard communication program once a quarter to make sure it works and meets the necessary objectives. Review any processes that need changing and update your employees accordingly.

OSHA Chemical Storage Requirements

Storage regulations are an important part of OSHA’s chemical material guidelines. Here is a breakdown of the regulations that outline how to store hazardous substances:

Large Quantity Storage

OSHA’s chemical safety rules for large quantity storage require that specially constructed storage tanks and piping systems be used to comply with extensive guidelines.

Small Quantity Storage

You can store smaller quantities of flammable liquids in approved containers that comply with the following regulations:

  • Up to one pint can be stored in a glass or approved plastic container
  • Store one-gallon quantities in a metal container
  • Two-gallon quantities should be stored in safety cans

Jet Rinse Triple-Rinsing Nozzle

Remaining compliant with OSHA hazardous material guidelines requires the proper disposal of chemical containers. Our Jet Rinse Triple-Rinsing Nozzle is ideal for employers who need to rinse and dispose of containers efficiently. The triple-rinsing jet action removes up to 99% of residue in less than one minute, and the sharp point punctures metal and plastic containers. This process renders the containers unusable, which means OSHA chemical safety rules. The nozzle is small enough to fit in your hand and is easy to use, simply:

  • Attach the Triple-Rinse Nozzle to any hose
  • Remove the protective guard
  • Puncture the chemical container
  • Rinse the container for one minute
  • Dispose of the chemical container

Our Jet Rinse Triple-Rinsing Nozzle is the fastest and most efficient way to meet compliance standards.
